Mother’s Day and Rosemary

This Mother’s Day will be tough on many moms, sons and daughters.   Social distancing and sheltering-in-place have muted what used to be a busy Spring day of visiting around and sharing our love for the amazing women who’ve made us who we are today. I know that there are brighter days ahead, and a sign here in town is the advent of garden centers opening up.  It’s an acknowledgement that there’s but a short window to get our plants in the ground for something we all need:  New beginnings.

In celebration of that, and for Mother’s Day, I’m going to use one of my favorite herbs, rosemary, to celebrate the moms in my life (present company included).  As rosemary is hearty enough to thrive in most climates, almost everyone can plant it.   So whether you’re keen to get into the garden or prefer to stay inside, here are 3 ways for you to commemorate a special Sunday with this versatile and fragrant herb.

Rosemary in the Garden

Topiary, bush, tree or plant, rosemary in the garden is a great way to remember mom all year round. A spiced floral fragrance that will treat your taste buds in the kitchen, you can liven up mom’s best recipes with a plant that will serve your culinary needs all summer long.

Rosemary in a Flute

A modern and cultivated addition to your cocktails, rosemary refines any simple syrup and updates the look of a Sunday spritzer with sprigs tall and emerald.   Channel the curiosity and glamour of the roaring 20s with this Cranberry Rosemary Champagne Cocktail which would make for an ideal toast with mom.

Rosemary in the Bath

Looking for a home bound oasis this Mother’s Day?  One part rosemary essential oil (sourced from the drugstore, not from your plant!) to two parts bath salt makes for a rejuvenating body scrub for the adventurous soul.  And if rosemary isn’t your scent of choice, there are more ideas in a book every mom needs, Secrets of the Spas

Rosemary has long been held a magical and mystical plant, with its Mediterranean roots intertwined with the Greek and Romans empires, two of the most powerful and storied tribes in history.  This weekend, I’m using rosemary to honor the most important tribe of all, motherhood.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone, xoxo.
